Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated in the U.S. as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November and has historical roots dating back to the autumn of 1621.
When enjoying your meal this Thanksgiving here are some interesting facts about your favorite dishes:
Sweet Potato is a much-loved side dish often served on Thanksgiving and approximately 3 billion pounds of sweet potato were produced in the U.S. last year.
Fancy some cranberry sauce with your turkey? It is forecast that 841 million pounds of cranberries will be produced in the U.S. this year. Wisconsin is estimated to lead all the states in production, producing 503 million pounds of cranberries.
The forecast number of turkeys the U.S. will raise in 2015 is 228 million. That’s down four percent from last year. It is estimated that 535 million pounds of turkey will be consumed on Thanksgiving.
Pumpkin pie is a traditional desert and in 2014 the U.S. produced 1.31 billion pounds of pumpkin. That’s a staggering 600,000 metric tons.
This Thanksgiving make sure to include your local famer as you give thanks. The world looks to farmers to do more than just produce food. Agriculture is also central to reducing hunge r and provides many people's main route out of poverty.
